Curriculum Vitae

Paul Hodgson was born in 1949.  He was educated at Westminster School in London, the University of Poitiers, the University of Keele and the College of Europe, Bruges.

He began his broadcasting career at the then BBC Radio London before moving as a contract reporter to the BBC's award-winning morning radio news and current affairs programme, Today.  He worked for eight years at the World Service, before going to Toronto as the BBC's Representative and Sales Manager in Canada.

On his return from Canada, he was appointed the BBC's Head of International Relations, responsible for five overseas offices as well as the London unit which managed a wide variety of the BBC's links with overseas broadcasters, international organisations and governments.  He was also responsible for co-ordinating the BBC's lobbying of the European Commission and Parliament at the time of the Draft Directive on Television without Frontiers.  He later carried on similar lobbying for one of the major ITV companies.

Paul joined the Association of European Journalists in 1974, becoming Chairman of the British Section for seven years in 1991.  Fluent in French, he has broadcast on French, Canadian, Belgian and Indian radio and television.  He has been a guest speaker and panellist on numerous seminars on the media in Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium and the UK.   He has also served as a broadcasting expert on the European Economic and Social Committee.

He has devised and arranged, since 1995, an annual three-day study visit programme to London by a group of 30 European corporate communication executives.  Also a guest speaker for many years at Boston University's London-based international mass communication post-graduate course, he has just completed a three-year appointment as Professor for the course.

Paul has travelled extensively in Europe - both East and West, North America, North Africa, Australia and New Zealand, as well as India, Thailand, Japan and China.  Whilst at the BBC, he undertook an evaluation assignment on the future of broadcasting in the Philippines after the overthrow of President Marcos.

All of these elements have played a role in all the various assignments he has undertaken as a media consultant and trainer - see the client page

Paul has a keen interest in history, including industrial archaeology, urban transport, canals and London's history.  He enjoys travel, theatre, films and meeting people.
