Shanks Pilot

By kind permission of Craford Stirling - www.oilyman.com

Crawford Stirling's well-preserved and very rare 1948 Pilot

Leading Details

12" (~30cm) 6 blade cylinder;  "Hoover" electric motor with belt drive

Drive only to the cutting cylinder;  Control by mains switch (no clutch)

Weight ~ 40 lbs (18 Kg);  Design not based on any other Shank's unit

The Shanks Pilot was only available during 1948 - hence its rarity

If any further information about this lawn mower model is known, please do let me or Crawford know - his details are given below.  In particular, information about the original price and length of cable would be gratefully received.  Original length of cable can be a useful additional indicator of the typical garden size at which a manufacturer was aiming its machine.

With many thanks to Crawford Stirling for supplying the information about this machine and allowing his photograph to be reproduced here.  His web-site, which includes useful mower material,  is at www.oilyman.com
